词源 | Mr. W. H. Shakespeare’s sonnets, published in 1609 by Thomas Thorpe but dating back to the 1590s, were dedicated to “Mr. W. H., the onlie begetter of these insuing sonnets.” Who W. H. is remains a mystery after almost four centuries. There are numerous candidates, four favorites among them: 1) Henry Wriothesley, third earl of Southhampton, to whom Shakespeare had dedicated Venus and Adonis (1593) and The Rape of Luc- rece (1594); 2) William Herbert, the third earl of Pembroke, to whom the First Folio was dedicated; 3) Sir William Harvey, the earl of Southhampton’s stepfather; and 4) an anonymous friend of publisher Thorpe who procured the manuscript for the pub- lisher. Also in contention are a mistress who betrayed Shake- speare with a friend; a dark beauty the Bard loved; and a rival poet. Oscar Wilde’s The Portrait of Mr. W. H. is an amusing at- tempt to establish W. H.’s identity. |
