词汇 moxie
词源
moxie. The rather bitter, tart, unsweetened flavor of Moxie, a popular New England soft drink, or tonic, as soda pop is often called in the area, has been suggested as the reason it yielded the slang word moxie, for “courage, nerve, or guts.” Or maybe, Moxie braced up a lot of people, giving them courage. These are only guesses, but the tonic, a favorite since at least 1927, is definitely responsible for a lot of moxie and other phrases, which, however, aren’t recorded until about 1939. But Moxie was originally made in 1884 as a patent medicine nerve tonic said to cure “brain and nervous exhaustion, loss of manhood, softening of the brain, and mental imbecility.” This goes far in explaining moxie, “nerve or courage,” if earlier uses for the term could be found. In any event, Moxie’s Lowell, Massachu- setts makers fizzed up their product toward the turn of the cen- tury when the government began cracking down on their health claims and Moxie became America’s first mass-market soft drink, the company even selling their product in “Moxie- mobiles,” car-shaped bottles.
