词汇 | slim pickins |
词源 | slim pickins; Slim. Picking can refer to the harvesting of a crop, this sense of the word first recorded in 1828 and often used in the Americanism picking bee. Pickings, however, can mean “gleanings or scraps,” and prefaced by slim (probably from German schlimm, “bad, small),” means “very little to be had, un- profitable.” Charlotte Bronte coined scanty pickings, a synonym for slim pickings, in her novel Jane Eyre (1847). In the late 1930s a tall, slender actor in cowboy movies took the name Slim Pick- ins at the beginning of a long career, Slim even then having been a century-old cowboy nickname for a thin person. |
