词汇 | sleuth |
词源 | sleuth. The first sleuth was a sleuthhound, the name for a bloodhound which gave us our word sleuth for a human detec- tive in about 1872. The sleuthhound, in turn, took the first part of its name from the Middle English sleuth meaning “track or trail.” Edgar Allan Poe may have written the first detective story, but author Harlan Page Halsey was the first to use the word “sleuth” as a synonym for a detective. He created the fictional character Old Sleuth, which later became his nickname, and for a time even held a copyright on the name. He was so pos- sessive of “sleuth” that he once went to court to prevent another writer from using the word. |
