Jacobian; Jacobite. These two words are often confused. Jacobian refers to the reign or time of James I (1556–1625), Scottish king of Great Britain from 1603 until his death. Jaco- bite refers to a supporter of James II (grandson of James I), who ruled as king of Great Britain for a brief three years end- ing in 1688. Forced to abdicate, James II died in exile in 1701, age 68. Jacobites continued to try placing a Scottish (Stuart) king on the throne, failing with James Francis Edward Stuart, “The Old Pretender,” and finally with his son, “Bonny Prince Charlie,” whose forces were defeated at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. |
