词汇 chicken
词源
chicken. A game teenagers have played since at least the late 1940s in which two drivers (often with passengers) drive their cars directly at each other at high speed, the loser, or chicken, the one who first swerves out of the way. It can also be played by driving at telephone poles, etc., to see how narrowly a driver can avoid hitting them, and by racing another car toward a cliff, as famously depicted in the film Rebel Without a Cause, star- ring James Dean. The game takes its name from to chicken out, to back away in fear, chicken-hearted or chicken as a slang synonym for a coward. The expression has often been used fig- uratively, as in the words of military expert Stephen Philip Co- hen (12/23/01): “The Indians are playing chicken. They’re counting on the United States to jerk the steering wheel so the Pakistanis do swerve out of the path of an onrushing Indian vehicle.”
