chicanery. Chicanery, the use of mean, petty subterfuge, es- pecially legal dodges and quibbles, came into English through a French word meaning the same. It seems originally to have de- rived from the Persian chaugan, for the crooked stick used in polo. The stick’s name somehow came to mean a dispute in polo and other games, then took on the meaning of a sharp, crooked practice in those games and in general. |
