chiasmus. A chiasmus is “a reversal in the order of words in two otherwise parallel phrases,” as in Shakespeare’s “Suit the action to the word, the word to the action” (Hamlet); or “This man I thought had been a Lord among wits; but, I find, he is only a wit among Lords” (Dr. Johnson of Lord Chesterfield). These quotes are from among the hundreds in Dr. Mardy Grothe’s Never Let a Fool Kiss You or a Kiss Fool You (1999), the title of which is also a chiasmus. |
