词汇 | cheyne-stokes breathing |
词源 | Cheyne-Stokes breathing. A medical term for gasping breathing that ceases for up to a minute, continues, and keeps alternating between gasping and breathlessness until death comes. As he lay on his deathbed, British poet A. E. Housman (1859–1936) remembered a passage from Arnold Bennett’s novel Clayhanger describing this “death breathing” named for William Cheyne and William Stokes, the physicians who first described it. This may have been his last terrible memory, for he remembered it when he began the same “death breathing.” But then maybe he realized the joke of it all and died gently laughing. |
