chestnut blight. A fungus disease mainly of the American chestnut (Castanea dentata), making it impossible to grow be- yond a small size and to produce chestnuts. The culprit is Endo- thia parasitica, which doesn’t seem to bother the European, Chinese, and Japanese chestnuts. The blight is first recorded in about 1905, after the village smithy labored under the spread- ing chestnut tree and Longfellow received $15 for his poem “The Village Blacksmith” in 1841. |
