practice what you preach. The King James Version of the Bi- ble translates the idea behind this phrase as “they say and do not” (Matt. 23:3). Over the centuries these words inspired writ- ers to devise poetic improvements upon them and in 1876 or so Rowland Howard came up with practice what you preach. The translators of the new Revised Standard Version of the Bi- ble liked this so much that they changed Matt. 23:3 to “they preach but do not practice” and the phrase was in the Bible at last. |
