vodka. This alcoholic drink, made from rye, barley, and even potatoes, among other fruits and vegetables, takes its name from the Russian voda, meaning “water.” The unaged, colorless drink does look something like water, but is so named because such spirits were once thought to be as essential to life as water—whiskey and the Scandinavian aquavit also derive from words meaning “water.” Vodka is first recorded in English in 1801, though the drink is of course many centuries older.
