voice mail. Voice mail, first recorded in 1980, was coined by American inventor and entrepreneur Gordon Matthews (1937–2002). According to his New York Times obituary (2/26/02), Matthews was inspired to invent the system when “he was stuck in heavy rain and noticed in a nearby dump a large bunch of pink ‘While You Were Out’ message slips. This gave him the idea that an apparatus permitting callers to record substantial messages in their own voices could help do away with the multitudes of message slips . . . that were burdening modern communications, notably in corporations.” Today, over 8 percent of American corporations use voice mail. |
