词源	Volunteer State. A nickname for Tennessee since the Mexi- can War in 1847, when 30,000 men from the state enlisted. It has also been called the Lion’s Den (possibly after border ruffi- ans nicknamed lions), the Hog and Hominy State, from the Tennesseans’ reputed liking for fatback and cornmeal (grits), and the Big Bend State, after the big bends in the Tennessee River. At the time of the Scopes “Monkey Trial” there in 1925 Tennessee was called the Monkey State.
