词汇 | voluminous |
词源 | voluminous. Sufficient to fill a large volume (book) or many volumes. First recorded in 1611, voluminous derives directly from the English word volume. That the word sometimes has a derogatory connotation is witnessed by a story about the British historian Edward Gibbon. Gibbon noted that author and politician Richard Brinsley Sheridan had complimented him. “Sheridan said,” he exulted, “that if you search the history of the world . . . read all the past histories, peruse the annals of Tacitus, read the luminous pages of Gibbon . . .” Gibbon, howev- er, was not so happy when he heard Sheridan’s reply to his exul- tations. “I did not say luminous,” he told a fellow parlimentarian, “I said voluminous.” |
