词汇 voltaire-s revenge
词源
Voltaire’s revenge. French critic Élie Catherine Fréron (1719–76) made the mistake of attacking Voltaire and the en- cyclopaedists. Voltaire, not a man to be tampered with, at- tacked him in a barrage of wicked epigrams, in his tragedies, in the virulent satire Le Pauvre Diable, and in an anonymous work called Anecdotes sur Fréron (1760). What hurt the critic most was Voltaire’s making him the principal character in his come- dy L’Écossaise. In this comedy Fréron’s magazine L’Année Lit- teraire (The Literary Year) is called “L’Ane Litteraire” (The Literary Ass). The play also depicts Fréron as a scoundrel, spy, toad, hound, snake, lizard, and a man with a heart of filth, among other things. Voltaire later circulated a quatrain about the critic:
The other day, down in a valley,
A serpent stung Fréron.
What think you happened then?
It was the serpent that died.
