vitex. A family of ornamental shrubs and trees often planted to attract bees, vitex is named from the Latin vieo, “to bind with twigs,” in reference to the flexible nature of its twigs. One vitex, Agnus castus, is called the chaste tree because the Romans con- sidered it an anaphrodisiac that calmed the body, and Athenian maidens who wished to remain chaste often strewed their couches with its leaves. |
