词汇 poppy
词源
poppy. Opium derives from the Greek opion, meaning simply “poppy juice” and reflecting the fact that the drug is made from the milky juice of the unripe pods of the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). The poppy and its narcotic properties have been known since prehistoric times, however, and the Egyptians used it medicinally long before the ancient Greeks. There are some 100 other species of poppies besides the opium poppy, many of these beautiful flowers grown in the home garden. In England, the artificial red flowers sold on Remembrance Day for the benefit of war veterans are called “Flanders poppies.” A 1915 poem by John McCrae seems to have been the first to connect this flower with the dead of World War I:
In Flanders fields the poppies grow
Between the crosses, row on row
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard among the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt Dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders field . . .
