A philosophy advocating the rejection of expressions or actions that could be considered offensive to a race, sex, class, religion, etc. American in origin, the term was first recorded in this sense in 1970 and probably dates to the 1960s. The term is often intended derisively today, due in part to extremist use of the doctrine. Political correctness is often ab- breviated PC, first recorded in 1986. See person. |
