dog it. To dog it is to loaf on the job, to shirk one’s responsi- bilities and evade work. This common expression goes back to about 1920 and may come from baseball, where it means to play in this lackadaisical manner. One theory suggests it origi- nated when an infielder lifted his leg, as a dog might, as a hard- hit grounder came to him, but the reference may simply be to the expression a lazy dog or lazy as a dog. |
