Eustace Budgell, a cousin of British essayist Joseph Addison, uses the first spelling in the January 24, 1712, number of The Spectator, noting, “The famous Doily is still fresh in everyone’s memory, who raised a Fortune by finding out Materials for such Stuffs as might at once be cheap and gen- teel . . . [a] frugal method of gratifying our pride . . .” |
