词源 | dog robber. Sometimes heard as a derogatory term for a baseball umpire, dog robber has military origins. It was used in the mid-19th century to describe an Army officer’s orderly, who ate in the officers’ mess and was contemptuously said to rob the dogs of the table scraps there. Later the contemptuous words were applied to umpires. |
