dogwood winter. Similar to blackberry winter. In 1907 an issue of American Folk-lore reported this explanation by a con- tributor: “ ‘Don’t you know what dogwood winter is?’ demand- ed the man from Hickory, North Carolina. ‘There is always a spell of it in May, when the dogwood tree is in bloom. For sev- eral days there is cold, disagreeable, cloudy weather, and often a touch of frost.’ ” |
