In Arthur Conan Doyle’s short story “Silver Blaze” (1892), Sherlock Holmes advises an inspector that the dog in the night-time did not bark because it knew the person who was stealing the horse from the stables. Since then the phrase has meant any unknowing participant in a crime. The phrase was used in 2003 by British author Mark Haddon as the title of his debut novel. |
