doldrums. The doldrums has come to mean any area where a ship is likely to be becalmed, especially that area near the equator between the northeast and southeast trade winds. Dol- drums, first recorded in 1811, probably derives from the words dull and tantrum, as if the dullness of such an area could drive one to tantrums. The phrase in the doldrums means “down in the dumps,” much like mariners felt when they weren’t moving anywhere. See monsoon. |
