词汇 | point-blank |
词源 | point-blank. A point-blank shot made by archers in 16th- century England was one in which the arrow was aimed or pointed directly at the small white, or blank, bull’s-eye in the center of the target. With the advent of firearms a shot was said to be point-blank when it remained approximately straight over a certain distance. Because close-range point-blank firing in gunnery led to brutal destruction, the term became a syno- nym for direct, uncompromising rejection or blunt, brutal frankness in such terms as point-blank refusal and point-blank denial. |
