词汇 | come down like a ton of bricks on someone |
词源 | come down like a ton of bricks on someone. To be very se- vere with someone, to come down hard on him. This Ameri- canism dates back to the 19th century and sounds much better than the British come down like a thousand bricks on him. But it has been pointed out that the British expression is more techni- cally accurate, in that bricks aren’t sold or measured by the ton. |
