词源 | colleen. A young Irish girl. The word derives from the Irish Gaelic cailin, meaning the same, which in turn comes from Old Irish. Gaelic, incidentally, is still spoken by anywhere from 40,000 to 600,000 people in Ireland, depending on whose esti- mate you accept. A marriageable Irish girl is called a “colleen bawn.” |
