词汇 sassafrass
词源
sassafrass. Folklore holds that the genus of small plants called Saxifrage (from the Latin saxum, “rock,” and frangere, “to break”) is so named because the plant was valued by the ancients as a medicine to break up kidney stones. However, the genus proba- bly got its name because the plants grow naturally in the clefts of rocks and could be imagined to have broken them. A plant that definitely was helpful in the fight against kidney stones is sassa- fras. The Romans drank a concoction made of sassafras tree bark (Sassafras albidum) to break up stones in the bladder, which is why its name means “stonebreaker.” Sassafras tea, a stimulant and diuretic, is also made from the tree’s bark, and sassafras oil, used in flavoring, perfume, and medicine, is made from its roots.
