Satchmo. The nickname of Louis Armstrong (1900–71), American jazz trumpeter, gravelly voiced singer, and virtuoso musician. He was first known as Satchel-mouth, which means someone with a big mouth, a very talkative person, and a jazz musician who plays a horn. Later on, it is said, a British admirer compressed satchel-mouth into Satchmo, a word used for the one and only Louis. |
