Sartoris. An old-order family of southern aristocrats featured in William Faulkner’s Sartoris (1929) and other novels. Throughout Faulkner’s work, the Sartoris clan, whose name has become a synonym for southern aristocracy, tries to with- stand the rise of the venal Snopeses, who have little history and are “just Snopeses, like colonies of rats or termites are just rats and termites.” See snopesism; wall street panic. |
