Ibn Saud had helped his father and the Saudi family, of the Wahabis sect of Islam, drive rivals from the city of Riyadh and capture the holy city of Mec- ca. His father was so impressed that he abdicated in favor of his imposing six-foot, four-inch, 240-lb. son. In 1932, Ibn Saud, a wise benevolent monarch who began modernizing the country, named the new nation after his family.
