词汇 | jack and jill |
词源 | Jack and Jill. Jack and Jill / went up the hill / to fetch a pail of water / Jack fell down and broke his crown / and Jill came tum- bling after. The most familiar of nursery rhymes has several most unfamiliar explanations. One has Jack and Jill being Hjuki and Bil of an older Scandinavian rhyme. Another has Jack and Jill as Empson and Dudley, the executed ministers of Henry VIII. A third explanation describes Jack and Jill as young lov- ers, with Jill, not Jack, being the one who “broke her crown,” that is, lost her virginity at the top of the hill. A recent New York Times advertisement (May 23, 2006) turns the old rhyme into: Jack and Jill ascended the escarpment to procure an ewer of H2O. |
