Official Monster Raving Loony Party. An Englishman named Screaming Lord Sutch (1941–99) founded this political party in the 1960s, and it has to have the most unusual name of any political party in history. Screaming Lord Sutch himself le- gally changed his name from David Sutch in the 1970s. He and his party never won an election, out of the record-holding 40 in which Sutch and his cohorts ran. Dressed in his trademark top hat and gold lamé jacket, Screaming Lord Sutch campaigned under the banner of “Vote For Insanity—You Know It Makes Sense,” offering such proposals as cheap electricity powered by joggers put to work running on treadmills instead of in the street. He threatened to change his party’s name to the Raving Sensible Party because by comparison with Margaret Thatcher’s ministers, his followers weren’t loony at all.
