The migrant farm workers of the Great Depression called the Okies took their name from Oklahoma, where many of them originally lived before they left the Dust Bowl and be- gan their journey west searching in vain for a golden land. They were of course immortalized in John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath.
