词汇 | ohm |
词源 | Ohm; Ohm’s Law. Unlike his contemporary Oersted, Ger- man scientist Georg Simon Ohm (1787–1854) was so poorly treated by fellow scientists that he protested by resigning his post as professor of mathematics at the Jesuit’s college in Cologne. In 1827 the physicist had published a pamphlet in- cluding what is now known as Ohm’s Law. His study of elec- tric currents eventually became the basic law of current electricity, but was coldly received at the time. Ohm may have thought of becoming a locksmith like several genera- tions of his family before him, but despite his humiliations he hung in there. About 10 years later, the importance of his work began to be realized and in 1841 he was awarded the Copley medal of the British Royal Society. It is said that none of Ohm’s work before or after his pamphlet is of the first order, this perhaps a reason for his initial rejection. He does appear to have been something of a scientific politi- cian, having sent copies of his first book to all the monarchs of Germany in order to obtain his first teaching position. It was in 1893 that the International Electrical Congress adopted his name for the ohm, a unit of electrical resistance. See also mho. |
