in the wings; proscenium. The unseen backstage part on both sides of the stage of a proscenium theater is called the wings. The expression in the wings has come to mean someone waiting in the wings, like an actor ready to go onstage, some- one available on short notice, as in “At least one presidential candidate is waiting in the wings.” Proscenium refers to the arch that separates a stage from the auditorium and was once a term for the stage itself. |
