词源	smellfungus. A discontented person, a grumbler and fault- finder. The first smellfungus was British novelist Tobias Smollett (1721–71), who was once imprisoned for libel. Smollett’s book Travels in France and Italy (1766) was entertaining but ill- tempered and novelist Laurence Sterne parodied the author as “Smellfungus” in his Sentimental Journey through France and Italy (1768). Within a short time smellfungus was being applied to any ill-tempered grumbler.
