More conservative etymologists smell a rat here and derive smelt from the Anglo-Saxon smelt, smooth and shiny, like fish itself. Smeltania, on Lake Charlevoix, Michigan, has long been a principal center for smelt fishing, and one of the few places named after a fish. |
