smelt. These small fish are said to take their name from the words smell it, because when first caught they smell like freshly cut cucumbers. More conservative etymologists smell a rat here and derive smelt from the Anglo-Saxon smelt, smooth and shiny, like fish itself. Smeltania, on Lake Charlevoix, Michigan, has long been a principal center for smelt fishing, and one of the few places named after a fish. |
