词汇 smell-o-vision
词源
Smell-O-Vision. Smell-O-Vision, “the first movies that stink on purpose,” was invented in about 1955 by Hans Laube, who called himself an “osmologist” and believed that his pro- cess would make people desert their home television sets and come stampeding back into the empty movie theaters of the era. Unlike its rival process, Aroma-Rama, which released a variety of confusing scents one after another through a the- ater’s ventilation system, Smell-O-Vision’s scents were dis- charged at the proper time from 50 tiny “scent vents” attached to the back of every seat. The scents were often overwhelming and even gross, as when the bulls were running in the Festival of Pamplona. But a New York Times critic wrote of one movie, “The odor squirters are mildly and randomly used, and pa- trons sit there sniffing and snuffling like a bunch of bird dogs trying to catch the scent.” Needless to say, the process never caught on.
