Smithson, the illegitimate son of Sir Hugh Smithson and Eliza- beth Macie, made many valuable analyses of minerals, and smithsonite, an important zinc ore, is also named in his honor. Congress took 10 years debating whether or not to accept his bequest, finally accepting largely through the efforts of John Quincy Adams. The museum was founded in 1846.
