词汇 | smith |
词源 | Smith. Smith has been the most common American surname for at least the last 50 years, according to the U.S. Census Bu- reau. As Justin Kaplan and Anne Bernays put it in The Language of Names, “Smith is the ultimate catchall for linguistic nautrali- zation. It takes in Schmidt, Schmitt, Schmitz, Smed, Szmyt, Schmeider, Smidnovic, Seppanen, Fevre, Kalvaitis, Kovars, Haddad, McGowan, and other variants that in their original language mean someone who works with metal.” In the United States alone there are 2,382,500 Smiths. The first of the Smiths in the United States was the English explorer and colonist John Smith (1580?–1631). |
