It takes in Schmidt, Schmitt, Schmitz, Smed, Szmyt, Schmeider, Smidnovic, Seppanen, Fevre, Kalvaitis, Kovars, Haddad, McGowan, and other variants that in their original language mean someone who works with metal.” In the United States alone there are 2,382,500 Smiths. The first of the Smiths in the United States was the English explorer and colonist John Smith (1580?–1631).
