smiley face. Unaccountably absent from most dictionaries today, smiley face was first recorded in print in 1972. The ubiq- uitous cartoon-style picture of a smiling face—usually in black and yellow, always with mouth turned up and dots for eyes— was invented by some anonymous artist in the late 1960s. It has since been a symbol for peace and happiness, among other causes. Seen and heard occasionally as happy face. The smiley face is well-known almost everywhere. According to the New York Times (July 5, 2006), “The most widely credited claim for inventing the smiley face goes to Harvey R. Bull, for the State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America, a Massachusetts- based company, in 1963. Mr. Bull, a graphic artist, was paid $45 for creating a button intended to cheer employees . . .”
