词汇 | smoking gun |
词源 | smoking gun. The term has been used so much over a rela- tively short period that it is almost a cliché. It means “indisput- able proof or evidence of a crime,” proof comparable to some- one with a smoking gun in hand being guilty of a shooting. It was first recorded about 1970 and became a prominent expres- sion during the Watergate political scandal that led to President Richard M. Nixon’s resignation in 1974. Smoking gun referred to a Nixon tape on which he said he wanted minimal FBI par- ticipation in the Watergate investigation. See deep throat. |
