make the grade. A train that makes the grade is one that manages to surmount a steep grade, or slope. Probably some- one coined the expression which means “to win despite great obstacles,” after a long, heavy effort laboring up a steep hill. But the phrase, which has been traced to only about 1930, may de- rive from milk making the grade, “reaching a proper standard” and being good enough to be labeled Grade A. |
