词汇 | make one-s gorge rise |
词源 | make one’s gorge rise. Hunting falcons are fierce, gluttonous creatures that store the food they eat in a pouch called the crop, or gorge. Their trainers in medieval times noticed that they fre- quently overate and vomited part of their food, which came to be called gorge, after the pouch it came from. To make one’s gorge rise therefore became a synonym for “to make someone sick.” The saying at first indicated extreme disgust and later ex- pressed strong resentment, so that today the phrase means to make a person violently angry. |
