词汇 | echo |
词源 | echo. The Greek nymph Echo chattered with Hera in order to distract her from the pursuit of Zeus. Hera punished her by de- priving her of all speech save the ability to repeat the words of others, giving her heartache—she lost her love, Narcissus—but giving us the word echo. Over time Echo died of grief, wither- ing away, with only her voice, the echo, remaining. The Roman poet Ovid probably invented this tale for his Metamorphoses, Book III. |
