词汇 | economist |
词源 | economist. Economist is a lofty occupational title but has its roots in a very common calling—housekeeping—deriving from the Greek oikonomia, meaning “house management.” An economist was a household manager in England at least after 1580, when we find the first known use of the word; the term did not acquire its present meaning until the 18th century. The old meaning of the word is retained in the home economics courses still taught in schools. |
