词汇 edgar
词源
Edgar. The Edgar is a small bust of Edgar Allan Poe presented annually to the best writers of detective stories by the Mystery Writers of America. Edgars are awarded in several categories, such as best novel and best short story. Poe himself once won a prize for his “Gold Bug” (1843), the code in the story developing from his interest in cryptography. Though he did invent the de- tective story in his “Murders in the Rue Morgue,” “The Pur- loined Letter,” and “The Mystery of Marie Roget,” the writer is best remembered for his poetry and horror tales. Among his greatest stories are “The Fall of the House of Usher,” “The Black Cat,” “The Pit and the Pendulum,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” He died at 40, perhaps addicted to drugs, having spent his last days stumbling into Baltimore polling places and casting ballots in exchange for drinks. “Three-fifths genius and two-fifths sheer fudge,” was James Russell Lowell’s facile opinion of Poe, but Yeats declared him “always and for all lands a great lyric poet.” See baltimore ravens; mad poet of broadway; poes of princeton; poet of the d.t.’s; raven.
