classic; classical. The Roman author of Attic Nights, Aulus Gellius (ca. 123–ca. 165) is said to have invented the terms clas- sic and classical, by which he meant “art of the first class.” More likely, the terms have their origins in the Roman five classes of citizens, of which the highest class were termed classici. Later, during the Renaissance, the best authors, thought to be Greek and Latin, were called classici auctores (classic authors) and their works were called classics. Today classic can mean 1) first class 2) ancient 3) typical (as in “She has a classic case of flu.”) |
